ECONOMY — Experts of the IMF, the World Bank and the European Commission are in Bucharest on a mission to assess the stand by agreement concluded with Romania in September. The agreement is worth around 2 billion euros plus another 2 billion euros from the European Commission. On Friday the representatives of the international lenders talked with the Romanian authorities about the 2013 budget execution, about fiscal measures and the 2014 budget. The PM Victor Ponta announced that the last budget rectification for 2013 would be negative and it is to be approved during Wednesday’s government session.
ECONOMY — Romania needs to be promoted on the markets from where it was absent over the past years, said Saturday the recently invested economy minister, Andrei Gerea. He said that a priority of his mandate was to support the Romanian exporters especially those who export to countries outside the European Union. We recall that the idea of looking for new markets for the Romanian products has been frequently mentioned by the Romanian President, Traian Basescu.
ENERGY– Reactor 2 of the nuclear power plant in Cernavoda (south eastern Romania) was re-connected on Saturday to the national power grid. The reactor was stopped early this week to repair one damaged power converter. The only nuclear power plant in Romania uses the Candu 6 Canadian-type technology and runs on natural uranium and heavy water. The two reactors in Cernavoda provide almost 20% of the electricity needed for domestic consumption.
COOPERATION– Romania and Georgia have decided to reactivate the ferryboat line that links Constanta to Batumi, both ports on the Black Sea. The representatives of the two countries signed in the Georgian capital Tbilisi a memorandum that sanctions the official resumption of sea links. The Romanian and Georgian authorities expressed hope that the move would facilitate the development of transports and the creation of jobs. The line was inaugurated in 1999, to be closed two years later.
THEATER — Bucharest is hosting until November 3rd the 23rd edition of the national theater festival which includes many events among which book launches, exhibitions and workshops. The festival started on Friday with an exceptional show “Troinele”- The Trojan Women by Andrei Serban. For the first time in the history of the show, that was first staged almost 40 years ago, at the La MaMa theater in New York and then in 1990 at the national theater in Bucharest “The Trojan Women” presents the original version of the music composed by Liz Swados for the opera show.
