The special parliamentary commission in Bucharest set up for the Rosia Montana mining project today has begun its last scheduled working week. In the wake of a fortnight’s hearings, analyses and fact-finding visits, the opinions Romania’s political class has been sharing over the issue remain unchanged, apparently. The governing Liberal Party and the Liberal Democrats in opposition said they would turn down the project, while the Liberals’ coalition partners, the Social Democrats are divided with respect to the aforementioned project. In Bucharest, thousands of people who are against the mining project in Rosia Montana took to the streets this past Sunday, for the sixth week running. Protesters have been delivering a pointed warning over the negative impact the mining would have over the environment. In another move, the Canadian investor reasserted the fact that the project would bring Romania more than 5 billion Euro.
The Anim’est International Film Festival continues in Bucharest. Romania’s biggest animation film festival has now reached its 8th edition. As an absolute first in Romania the American Film Academy member Ron Diamond today will be presenting a collection of short reels — some of which are the recipients while other received nominations, for the Oscar Award. Up until October 13, nearly 1.040 animation films are screened, coming from 65 countries, as well as feature and short reel films, video clips of ads that made history in their field. Anim’est is a member of the Cartoon Pan European circuit. Since 2012 the festival has been receiving the support of the MEDIA program. Each year the festival attracts more than 20 thousand film lovers.
Specialists of the National Earth Physics Institute jointly with oil and natural gas experts analyze the situation in the eastern Romanian County of Galati, where for the past two weeks more than two hundred earth quakes have occurred. Experts who traveled to the area said there was a strong stress in the earth shell, which has reactivated a seismic downthrow. Seismologists, however, have considered a possible link between the Galati County tremors and this past Sunday’s 5.5 Magnitude earthquake in Vrancea County.
