The President of Romania’s Chamber of Deputies Valeriu Zgonea in Brussels today takes part in a round table focusing on “ The State of Europe” — Tough Choices for a Troubled Europe.”, where debates will be focusing on the European economic strategy, the opportunity of setting up the Single Market under the present crisis-generated economic conditions, the impact the Europe Zone will have on the future of the European integration. Also subject to debate are the policies implemented to curtail unemployment among youngsters as well as the economic inequality.




Romania’s President Traian Basescu today has received in audience his Estonian counterpart Toomas Hendricks Ilves, who is on a state visit to Bucharest. President Ilves leads a high-ranking official delegation which today is to take part in a bilateral business meting, venued by Romania’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Romania and Estonia expressed their interest in developing bilateral dialogue and cooperation in such sectors as IT and communications, defense and security, real estate and constructions.




The new Highway Code draft will be included on the agenda of the meeting the Government will be holding in Bucharest today. Among the most relevant provisions are the increase of the fine quantum for drivers to 9,600 lei, that is 2, 150 Euro, as well as a period of maximum two years when drivers can be banned from using their driver’s license. Those who do not observe the red color signal at the traffic light or fail to give right of way are to stay pedestrians for 60 days. For drivers whose speed goes over the lawfully stipulated 60 kilometers per hour, or for those who are found drinking and driving, the fine can reach as much as 4,000 Lei, that is 900 euro. The opposition targeted criticism as the new Highway Code draft, demanding that the fine quantum be correlated with the population’s average income. In Romania, the minimum salary stands at 800 Lei, that is 180 Euro.
