Adrian Zuckerman was confirmed, on Wednesday, as US ambassador to Romania by the American Senate, with 65 votes in favor and 30 against. He said at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on his nomination in June that he wished to repay American hospitality by advancing U.S. interests in Romania. “If I am confirmed, I would like to offer constant support to the important steps to fight corruption in Romania,” he said in the Senate.
He also pointed out that the most important aspect of the American-Romanian relationship is military cooperation, and that Romania is rich in natural resources. Romania is rich in forests, minerals, petroleum, natural gas and other natural resources, he said at the hearing. Recent Black Sea exploitation has revealed substantial oil reserves that have the potential to support the energy security of Romania and Europe, he also explained, adding that the fight against corruption and supporting judicial independence are vital for Romania’s prosperity and security.
Adrian Zuckerman is a real estate lawyer who immigrated to the United States from Romania at the age of 10, and he still speaks fluent Romanian. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1979 and the New York Law School in 1983 and became a member of the New York bar a year later. He was first nominated by President Donald Trump in July 2018. He has also acted as the chair of a civil court judicial screening panel and as an arbitrator for the Real Estate Board of New York. Active in philanthropic and educational initiatives, Mr. Zuckerman is a member of the board of Kids Corp. and serves on the alumni board of New York Law School.
