The Roland Garros tennis tournament is set to close this weekend. Of Romania’s representatives in the women’s competitions, Gabriela Ruse reached the farthest, qualifying to the semi-finals of the women’s doubles together with Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk. This is the second qualification of the two athletes in the semi-final of a Grand Slam tournament, after Australian Open in 2023.
The Romanian mini-football team advanced to the semifinals of the European Championship in Sarajevo. On Thursday, the reigning world champions ousted Bosnia Herzegovina 4-1 in the quarter-finals. Romania is competing in the semifinals of the European Championship for the tenth time and has six continental titles on its record sheet. In the previous edition of the European Championship, in 2022, Romania lost the final to Azerbaijan.
This weekend, the European Outdoor Athletics Championships kick off in Rome, a competition now in its 26th edition. Representing Romania will be 23 athletes, 15 girls and 8 boys. Among them are five athletes already qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris, namely Alina Rotaru – Kottmann in the long jump event, Bianca Ghelber in the hammer throw event, Andreea Miklos in the 400m race, and marathon runners Joan Chelimo Melly and Delvine Meringor.
This weekend is the deadline for announcing the official teams that will take part in the European Football Championship in Germany. According to experts’ estimates, Romania’s delegation will have a low share on the transfer market, estimated at 90 million EUR. Defender Radu Drăguşin is market-wise the most expensive player with an estimated transfer fee of 25 million EUR. The most valuable team in the competition is England, with an estimated transfer value of 1.67 billion EUR. (VP)
