Romanian tennis player Sorana Cîrstea on Sunday advanced to the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 tournament in Miami, totaling 8.7 mln USD in total prizes, after ousting Daria Kasatkina of Russia, 7-5, 6-2. Seeded 19th in the women’s singles, Cîrstea won at the end of one hour and 28 minutes of playtime. The Romanian thus secured a 101 thousand USD check and 120 WTA points. In the next phase the Romanian will go up against Danielle Collins of the USA.
In women’s handball, CSM Bucharest has qualified to the Champions League quarterfinals after winning 30-24 against Krim Ljubljana of Slovenia in the second leg of the quarterfinals in Bucharest. In the first leg, the Romanian champions had won 30-24 away from home. In the next round in April, CSM will take on Metz of France for a position in the Final Four tournament. In the EHF European League, two Romanian clubs have qualified to the Final Four tournament to be hosted by Graz, Austria over June 1-2. In the quarterfinals on Saturday, Gloria Bistrița won 27-25 against Mosonmagyaróvár of Hungary. The Romanian team had also won 32-30 away from home in the first leg. On Sunday, Dunărea Brăila won 26-25 against Podravka Koprivnica of Croatia at home after winning 32-26 the first leg.
In news from ice-hockey, Corona Brașov and ACSH Gheorgheni are tied 1-1 after the team from Brașov won 5-3 on Friday while on Saturday ACSH won 2-1.
