NATO Day is celebrated in Romania every year, on the first Sunday in Apriil

On the celebration of 71 years since the setting up of the North Atlantic Alliance, Romanias president Klaus Iohannis made an appeal for a strong alliance, against the background of the Covid-19 pandemic. He gave assurances that Romania would continue to act in a coherent and convergent manner, together with the other allies, in order to make sure that the Alliance remained strong and effective.
“NATO Day in Romania is being celebrated this year under the sign of unity and solidarity, as the world is facing an unprecedented crisis for the contemporary world”, reads the message conveyed by Prime Minister Ludovic Orban. “The current challenge facing the Alliance is to make sure this health crisis does not turn into an additional security risk”, the premier also says in his message.
In the message sent on the celebration of 16 years since Romania joined NATO, the Romanian Defense Minister Nicolae Ciuca reiterates that Romanias being part of the Alliance has brought this country security and prosperity, but also experience and a professionalization of the army, thanks to the NATO missions and exercises that the Romanian army have participated in. Even these days, NATO planes are carrying materials and aid, showing that NATO has an important part to play in responding to the crisis triggered by Covid-19, Nicolae Ciuca also says.
In turn, the Speaker of the Romanian Chamber of Deputies, Marcel Ciolacu, has stressed that Romania has managed to become one of the powerful members of the North Atlantic Alliance, as it has significantly contributed to its security and prosperity. “Our NATO and EU memberships are the main pillars of Romanias foreign policy”, Marcel Ciolacu has added.
“Being part of the most important alliance in history, in which solidarity and unity are some of the most essential principles, reconfirms Romanias profile as a modern and democratic state and helps safeguard national security at an unprecedented level”, reads a communique issued by the Foreign Ministry.
On NATO Day, Romanias national flag and the NATO flag were raised at the Defense Ministrys headquarters. Also, similar activities marking Romanias NATO membership were carried out in various units in county capitals and local garrisons. (M.Ignatescu)
