Situated in central Romania, Sibiu county has an unmatchable holiday offer, which includes its old fortified churches, winter resorts and the city of Sibiu that has seen an impressive cosmopolitan development after being declared ‘European capital of culture back in 2007. The tourist objectives we have mentioned before are a must for every tourist coming to the region. This list couldnt be complete without the natural park called ‘Golul Alpin Fagaras, with the famous Transalpina, one of Romanias most spectacular motorways and without the picturesque region known as Marginimea Sibiului. Here is Alin Chipaila, chair of the Sibiu County Travel Association.
“Sibiu is definitely a destination that has to be discovered by those who havent visited it yet and rediscovered by those who have. We have six established routes for those who are into mountaineering and adventure tourism, the Nature Road, the Cheese Road, leading to the Marginimea Sibiului, the Fortifications Road, as Sibiu prides itself in its fortified churches and the Salt Road in the Secaselor Valley. These routes, which are found on the Travel Associations very webpage can take tourists to the objectives mentioned.
Alin Chipaila, chair of the Sibiu County Travel Association has told us the number of foreign tourists coming to Sibiu is on the rise.
“We see them almost everywhere and try to give them directions when they need them. The feedback is positive and everyone says that Sibiu is a destination recommended to everyone willing to discover Romania. A couple of days ago the Lonely Planet travel advisor said that Sibiu is a place worth seeing in 2016, pointing to the fact that in September the county of Sibiu was awarded a fresh title, the European Region of Gastronomy for 2019, an additional reason for coming to visit the place. We intend to be an ambassador for the Romanian cuisine as we have here a series of delicious cheese-based meals, out of which the most representative is ‘bulz, a mixture of matured cheese and polenta. There are also other delicious traditional dishes, such as those of pork or those based on various types of cheese, of mutton, goat or cow.
Any holiday in the county of Sibiu starts in the county seat, Sibiu, home to the first theatre opened in Transylvania. History lovers will be fascinated with the Great Square here surrounded by big old buildings erected by the leading figures of the 15th and 18th centuries. Also here you can walk down the local Hall of Fame paying homage to the most distinguished names in the theatre world. Sibiu is a city with a sparkling cultural life as Alin Chipaila, chair of the Sibiu County Travel Association told us.
“An important event devoted to documentary film is well underway these days, also being one of the top-notch events in the filmmaking industry – the Astra Film Festival, to be held until October 23rd. Everybody has the chance to discover impressive productions, including Oscar nominations put forth by various countries for next years edition of the festival. I should also like to mention the Clara Haskil International festival, targeting classical music lovers, to be held over October 29th and November 5th. Then the end of the year has yet another important event in store, each season drawing many tourists to Sibiu, namely the Christmas Fair, hosted by Sibius Great Square and which wraps the whole city in a fairy-tale attire, taking us to childhood, to authenticity, to everything we can discover thanks to the products to be found there, and the customs that are presented at the Fair.
Sibiu has its own Tourism Information center, to be found in the Great Square. Apart from other tourism promotion materials of the county, the Center also provides tourists with a map of the city and of the region. The site of Sibiu County Travel Association, www.sibiu-turism.ro, offers a network of tourism information centers where you can get info on tourist attractions. Targeting the public at large, the information is offered in English German, French and Hungarian. VF Here is the president of the Sibiu County Travel Association, Alin Chipaila, wrapping up this weeks Traveler s Guide.
“We extend our heartfelt invitation to all your listeners to come and discover Sibiu County, all the more so as the city is reachable in many ways. Whatever it is that tourists can do over here can turn into a genuine experience, by means of which they return home richer and more energetic, so that they can carry on with their day-to-day activities. So we gladly invite you to come to Sibiu!
