U-BT Cluj-Napoca, a basketball side
from western Romania has obtained its fourth win in the men’s competition EuroCup.
Romania’s champions secured an 88-80 win against Slovenian side Olimpija
Ljubljana, in Group A on Wednesday night. U-BT also won the first game, 94-76.
In the other matches of this group, Ukrainian side Prometei Slobojanske has defeated
Italian team Germani Brescia, 79-72, and the Germans from Ratiopharm Ulm beat
Lithuanian side Lietkabelis 78-69. U-BT ranks eighth in the group which has 10
sides. The first 8 sides in the group are qualified for the competition’s eighth
finals.
In the Champions League’ Group B,
Romanian women’s volleyball side Alba Blaj conceded a 3-0 defeat to Italian
side Vero Volley Milano. In the other match of the group, French side Volero Le
Cannet defeated Ukrainian side Prometei Dnipro 3-0. Milano and Le Cannet are
heading the group with three wins, while Alba and Dnipro each have one. Blaj
will play the next game on February in Targu Mures against Volero le Cannet.
In group E, Polish side Chemik
Police outperformed CSM Targoviste 3-2. Romania’s vice-champions, at their
debut in Champions League remains with only one win. In the other match of the
group Ezacibasi Istanbul secured a 3-0 win against Bulgarian side, Maritza
Plovdiv. The Turkish team ranks first in the standings with four wins out of
four games, Chemik Police comes second with three wins and CSM Targoviste comes
in the third place. The group’s winners are directly qualified for the quarters,
while the runner-ups and the best side on the third position will go into
playoffs.
Romania’s last representative in
the singles draw of the Australian Open, Irina Begu was eliminated on Thursday
after conceding defeat to German player Laura Siegemund, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3
