On Thursday, Romanian athletes won two other medals at the World Junior Swimming Championships in Lima. In the mixed 4×100 meters relay final the Romanian team made up of David Popovici, Patrick Sebastian Dinu, Rebecca Diaconescu, Bianca Costea won the silver medal, and in the 800m freestyle Vlad Stancu won the bronze medal. On Saturday, David Popovici will compete in the 100m freestyle heats. Popovici holds the world record in the 100m freestyle event as well as the titles of world and European senior champion.

At the US Open, Romania was left without representatives in the women’s singles. On Thursday, in the second round, the last Romanian tennis players in the competition Sorana Cîrstea and Irina Begu were eliminated. The Swiss Belinda Bencic, seed number 13, defeated Sorana Cîrstea 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, and the Chinese qualifier Yuan Yue defeated Irina Begu 6-3, 7-6. For having qualifed to the second round, Cîrstea and Begu will receive 121,000 dollars and 70 WTA points each.
Thursday saw the end of the eighth stage of the Romanian Superleague football championship, with the last two games remaining to be played. In Botoşani, the match between the local team, Fotbal Club, and FC Argeş ended in a draw, 0 all. Then, in Mediaş, Hermannstadt defeated Universitatea Craiova 1-0. On Friday, the first two games of the ninth stage will be played: Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe will be up against CS Mioveni and Universitatea Cluj will play against FC U Craiova. On Saturday, UTA plays, in Arad, with Chindia Târgovişte, and Rapid Bucharest goes to Voluntari. On Sunday, Petrolul will play, in Ploiesti, against FC Botoşani. On Monday, FC Argeş plays Hermannstadt in Pitesti, and Universitatea Craiova faces Farul Constanţa in Drobeta-Turnu Severin. Farul and Rapid lead the ranking, with 18 points each.
