We continue with news from basketball. Sepsi Sfântu
Gheorghe qualified for the last 32 of the women’s FIBA EuroCup. In their last Group
B match, Sepsi lost to the Hungarian side Uni Győr away 69:73, but had already
secured their qualification to the next stage in the previous match.
It’s volleyball next. In the CEV Cup, the men’s side
Arcada Galaţi on Wednesday defeated the French side Chaumont 3-nil in the first
leg of the round of last 32. Arcada, who are the Romanian champions, won the match
in 1 hour and 26 minutes. Their best player was the Croatian international Filip
Sestan, who scored 18 points. The second leg will take place on 8th
December in France.
Let’s end this round-up with football. The quarterfinals
of the Romanian Cup are taking place this week. Two matches were held on
Tuesday, when Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe defeated Chindia Târgovişte 2:1 in Ploiesti,
while FC Voluntari defeated the second-tier side FC Buzău 1-nil. On Wednesday, FC
Argeș defeated the second-tier side Poli Timișoara 5:4 away, after penalty
shoot-outs. Poli played the extra time with ten players, after Octavian Ursu was
eliminated on minute 90. In the final quarterfinal match on Thursday, ACSO
Filiași, a third-tier side, are facing Universitatea Craiova. (CM)
