The two teams representing Romania in the CEV Cup have both made it to the competition’s quarterfinals. CSM Volei Alba Blaj on Tuesday grabbed a 3-nil away win against Czech opponents Prostejov, in a fixture counting towards the second leg of the round of 16. We recall that CSM Volei Alba Blaj had also won the first leg of the tie, also 3-nil.
CSM Volei Alba Blaj’s Serbian player Nadia Ninković was the top scorer of the game, with 17 points, while her Bulgarian teammate, Maria Karakasheva, had a record of 13 points. Romanian women’s national team star Nneka Onyejekwe and the American Sonja Newcombe scored 10 points each.
In the CEV Cup’s upcoming stage scheduled in February, CSM Volei Alba Blaj face Turkish side Galatasaray Istanbul, with the fixture being a reenactment of the Champions League semifinals in 2018. We recall that in spring last year, in the Final Four, Alba Blaj grabbed a 3-1 win in Bucharest. Then Alba Blaj played the final against another Turkish team, VakifBank, but at that stage they sustained a nil-3 defeat. We recall that CSM Volei Alba Blaj was the first Romanian team to have made it to Europe’s top teams after the new format was enforced, of the Europe’s main inter-club competitions.
Also in the 2019 edition of the CEV Cup, Stiinta Bacau has succeeded an exceptional qualification in the quarterfinals, grabbing a 3-nil away win against Dutch opponent Sliedrecht Sport, in the round of 16’s away series. We recall that in the first leg, Stiinta won 3-2, on home court. With Florin Grapa at the helm, Stiinta provided the top scorer of the competition, Denisa Adrian Rogojinaru, who scored no less than 17 points. Ana Cristina Cazacu contributed 12 points, while Georgiana Fales had a 9-point contribution to the overall score. In the quarterfinals, Stiinta Bacau is up against the winner of the match pitting Czech team Olomouc against Belgian side Asterix Avo Beveren. The return leg is scheduled in the Czech Republic this coming Thursday.
