The Weightlifting federation is one of the federations with the best results. In 2017, it brought Romania almost a hundred medals in juniors’ ands seniors’ versions of World and European competitions. Undoubtedly, Romania’s number one weightlifter was Loredana Toma who in December 2017 won three gold medals in the World Championships in Anaheim, in the clean and jerk, snatch and total events. Previously Loredana Toma had made public her claim to the world title. We recall that in April 2017 at the European Championships held in Croatia’s Split Toma swept the board in the 63-kilogram category.
The Romanian Rowing Federation also boasts an impressive medal tally this year, comprising 33 medals of which 21 are gold, won in European and World and championships, in their under-21, juniors and seniors’ versions. Among Romania’s rowing performers in 2017 is Madalina Beres who was also designated the best athlete of Dinamo Bucharest sports club. In the world championships held in the US in the fall, Beres was a member of the eight crew that won the world title, while at the European Championships held in the Czech Republic in May, Beres twice grabbed gold in the pair and eight events.
The Romanian Fencing Federation has also awarded its athletes. A silver medallist at the European Championships in Tbilisi, Bianca Pascu was designated athlete of the year. Olympic champion Ana Maria Popescu got the award for the most spectacular comeback in 2017. (Translated by E. Nasta)
