TENNIS — Romanian woman tennis player Irina Begu lost to Croatia’ Ana Konjuh, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 on Wednesday, in the second round at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the year. Also on Wednesday, Romania’s best ranked player, namely world no. 2 Simona Halep faces the Brazilian player Beatriz Haddad Maia, and the 115th-ranked Ana Bogdan meets France’s Caroline Garcia. Also in the second round, another Romanian player, Sorana Cirstea, faces the American player Bethanie Mattek-Sands on Thursday. In the doubles, the pair made up of Monica Niculescu and Taiwan’s Hao-Ching Chan has qualified for the second round, after defeating the pair made up of Romania’s Raluca Olaru and Veronica Cepede Royg of Paraguay, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. In the men’s doubles, the pair made up of Romanian Horia Tecau and the Dutch Jean-Julien Rojer got eliminated in the inaugural round, for the second year in a row, by Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis/Jordan Thompson, 7-6, 7-6 ,7-6.
