Romanian fencers came empty-handed
from the European fencing championships held last week in Dusseldorf, Germany. Ranking
fourth in the standings, male sabers from our delegation came closest to the
podium.
In the Round of 16, Romania secured
a 45-31 win against Belgium and outperformed Russia 45-42 in the quarters. Our
athletes were stopped in their tracks by Hungary 45-40 and they also lost the
contest for the third position 35-45 to Italy.
Sambo fighters from Romania,
Daniela Poroineanu in the 56 kilogram category, Anda Mihaela Valvoi in the 64
and Alina – Petronela Paunescu in the 80+ kilogram on Saturday walked away with
bronze medals from the European Games in Minsk.
In the same competition Romanian boxers,
Cosmin Petre Girleanu and Maria Claudia Nechita on Sunday qualified for the
quarter-finals of their categories. Girleanu, world under-21 champion in 2015,
obtained a 3-2 win against Hungarian Attila Bernath in the eighth finals. The
Romanian will be up against Armenian Artur Hovhasinian in the quarters. In the
women’s contest, Claudia Nechita has qualified for the quarter finals of the 51
kilogram category after 5-0 win against Veronica Losvik of Norway and will be
up against Svetlana Soluianova of Russia in the quarters on Wednesday.
Romania’s athletics team has
qualified for the quarter finals of the same competition. They were part of a
qualifying series that also included Russia, France, Italy, Slovenia and
Estonia. The best Romanian athletes were Mihai Donisan, who came first in the
high jump event and Florentina Iusco who came second in the long jump event.
The quarter finals are due on Tuesday.
Monica Niculescu has won the ITF
lawn tournament in Ilkley, Great Britain. On Sunday, the Romanian defeated
Timea Babos of Hungary in the finals 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
