On the National Arena in Bucharest this past Tuesday, the team from Transylvania walked home with the trophy for the fourth time in the club’s history, in the wake of a nail-biting final. CFR grabbed a hard-fought 7-6 win over Dinamo Bucharest, after extra time and penalty shootouts.
Early into the game Dinamo was the better team, launched their attacks with a lot of bite and on 23 minutes were granted a penalty kick for the foul play Andrei Muresan had on CFR’ s Harlem Gnohere, who also turned the kick into a goal.
On 35 minutes, Romario Kortzorg served Eric Bicfalvi who scored the second goal for his team with a header. Early into the second half CFR Cluj scored their first goal, as Spaniard Juan Carlos Ruiz’s powerful shot from 20 meters defeated Dinamo’s goalie Vytautas Černiauskas.
One minute from time, CFR Cluj leveled the score thanks to the header of another Spaniard, Cristian Lopez. The two halves of the extra time were not exceedingly spectacular. Both teams were so very tense on the pitch, lest they should make a fatal mistake. In the penalty shootouts all CFR footballers scored, while Dinamo’s Dorin Rotariu failed to score, so CFR eventually emerged as winners.
As an absolute first, this past Tuesday’s stakes in Romanian Cups finals were exclusively domestic. Neither of the two teams was entitled to a place in the European Cups. CFR Cluj have reached insolvency, while Dinamo managed to avoid that, yet it was much too late for the Bucharest team to reclaim its right to play in a European competition.
