In tennis news, the Romanian-Georgian pair Irina Bara an Ekaterine
Gorgodze won the doubles title at the Transylvania Open hosted by Cluj Napoca
and worth over 235,000 dollars in prize money. They defeated Serbia’s Aleksandra
Krunic and The Netherlands’ Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove in three sets, 4-6, 6-1,
11-9. Bara and Gorgodze earned 10,300 dollars in prize money and 280 WTA points
in the doubles ranking.




Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit won the tournament’s singles final, defeating
the first seed and home crowd’s favourite Simona Halep in straight sets, 6-2,
6-3. Winning the Transylvania trophy secured 25-year-old Kontaveit, who is ranked
14th in the world, the qualification for the WTA Finals. 30-year-old
Halep, who is in 18th place in the WTA ranking, played in Cluj her
first final this year, but this was the 40th in her career, of which
she won 22 and lost 18. She earned 180 points for playing the final, with Kontaveit
getting 280 points for winning the title.




In news from women’s handball, CSM Bucharest narrowly lost to the French
side Brest Bretagne Handball 29-30 on Saturday at home in Champions League
Group A. Three minutes before the end of play, CSM were leading 29-27, but failed
to score from two attacks, while Brest scored twice and then again in the final
seconds, to win the match. CSM previously won three matches in a row, but are
now 6th in the group, with 6 points. They will next face FTC-Rail
Cargo Hungaria on 13th November.




The 14th leg of the First Romanian Football League took place
at the weekend. On Friday, FC Botoșani lost to Farul Constanţa, nil-2. On
Saturday, Universitatea Craiova defeated CS Mioveni 5-2, with Andrei Ivan
scoring four times for Craiova; and CFR Cluj defeated FC Voluntari 1-nil, with Billel
Omrani scoring the winning goal. On Sunday, Gaz Metan Mediaş drew 1-all with
Academica Clinceni; Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe defeated Dinamo Bucureşti 4-1; while FCSB
won against FC Argeş 2-1. On Monday, in the final leg matches, UTA Arad lost to Chindia
Târgovişte nil-2; and Rapid Bucharest drew nil-all against FC U Craiova. CFR Cluj currently top the ranking with 36 points, followed by Universitatea
Craiova, with 28 points, and FCSB, with 27. (CM)
