Fixtures
counting towards Romanian Cup’s round of 16 on Wednesday provided a new
surprise as Steaua Bucharest was eliminated from the competition conceding
defeat to second-league team CS Mioveni, in the wake of extra time and penalty
shootouts. There was a blank draw on the scoreboard after regular time. Then
the 15-minute halves followed, when CS Mioveni’s Andrei Nila put his team ahead
in minute 95. Then, Steaua’s Vlad Achim drew level 5 minutes from time.
In the
penalty shootouts, of six shots Steaua missed two, while CS Mioveni missed only
one shot. The host team won by 5 goals to 4 and will make headway into the
competition thanks to their aggregate 6-5 win. It is the third
counter-performance running for Steaua in one week alone, as they failed to
qualify for Europa League’s knockout phase this past Thursday and were
denied the top position in the wake of this past weekend’s domestic
championship round.
In another
fixture counting towards Romanian Cup’s round of 16 , also on Wednesday, in
Buftea nearby Bucharest FC Voluntari outclassed ASA Targu Mures, 3-nil. The
round of 16’s first three fixtures were played on Tuesday. Poli Timisoara
outperformed second league contenders CS Afumati 3-nil, while in Buzau, CSU Craiova
secured a 2-nil win against another second-league squad, Dacia Unirea Braila.
In Cluj, CFR won the game against Poli Iasi 2-nil.
The round of
16’s last three fixtures are played on Thursday, as Luceafarul Oradea take on
Astra Giurgiu, Viitorul Constanta face Pandurii Targu Jiu, while Gaz Metan
Medias are pitted against Dinamo Bucharest.
One of Romania’s
most popular football clubs Rapid Bucharest no longer exists, as a court ruling
has dismantled FC Rapid SA Company on account of pending debts.
