Russia’s
president, Vladimir Putin, on Thursday authorized a military operation in
Eastern Ukraine in order to protect the people, calling on the Ukrainian army
to lay down their weapons. President Putin insisted that Ukraine’s bid to join
NATO is unacceptable.
According to the
CNN, explosions were reported in the Borsypil area, close to the capital Kiev, minutes
within the announcement. Additional explosions were also reported in the cities
of Kramatorsk, Mariupol, Odessa and Kharkov, according to different sources. The
authorities have restricted air traffic in the regions around Kyiv, Dnipro,
Lviv, Odessa and Simferopol.
US president Joe
Biden has condemned Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified attack on Ukraine in
a statement early Thursday morning. President Putin has chosen a premeditated
war that will bring a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering. Russia
alone is responsible for the death and destruction this attack will bring, and
the United States and its Allies and partners will respond in a united and
decisive way, the US president said.
On Wednesday
night, during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, Secretary
General Antonio Guterres had told Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop
attacking Ukraine and to give peace a chance.
