TALKS Romanias Prime Minister designate, USR leader, Dacian Ciolos has announced after a couple of phone calls with leaders of the National Liberal Party (PNL), UDMR and with representatives of the national minorities, they have agreed to have a first round of talks for rebuilding the ruling coalition on Wednesday. Yesterday, the PNL said they would hold talks with the Prime Minister designate only after he had come up with the solution of a Parliament majority jointly with the Social Democrats (PSD) and AUR with which they had recently tabled a censure motion against the PNL-UDMR cabinet. We recall the USR had been part of the sacked government until September. After talks with Parliament parties on Monday, the countrys president Klaus Iohannis designated Dacian Ciolos to build a majority that can vote in Parliament the cabinet he proposed. The new Prime Minister has been given 10 days to complete the task.
TENNIS The pair made up of Romanian tennis player Horia Tecau and German Kevin Krawietz has qualified for the quarter finals of the ATP Masters 1,000 in Indian Wells, California after a 7-6, 7-6 win against Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey of the USA. The Romanian-German pair will be taking on Tim Puetz of Germany and Michael Venus of New Zealand in the quarter finals.
COVID-19 Over 91 hundred new daily Covid-19 infections were reported in Romania on Monday, most of them in the countrys capital city Bucharest. 209 Covid-related fatalities were also reported and 17 thousand people are being treated in hospitals. 16 hundred patients are in ICUs. Capital city Bucharest and the county of Timis in the countrys west have reported the highest infection rates, 14 per thousand and 10 per thousand respectively. According to doctors, the number of those in need of intensive care is much bigger but ICUs have a limited number of beds. Two mobile units have been installed in an attempt to solve the situation. The increasing number of infections has given an impetus to the vaccine rollout, although the Romanians interest in vaccination remains low as compared to most EU countries. The number of those who got one dose of the vaccine in Romania stands at 5.8 million.
FOOTBALL Romanias national football side on Monday night secured a 1-0 home win against Armenia in Group J of the World Cup 2022 preliminaries. Alexandru Mitrita scored the victory goal for the hosts on the 26th minute allowing Romania to climb up to the second position in a group topped by Germany which is already qualified, North Macedonia comes third, Armenia fourth, Iceland fifth and Liechtenstein occupies the last place. Next month will be seeing a new round of matches in this group, when Romania will be up against Iceland in a home game on November 11th, and take on Liechtenstein on their own turf three days later. The groups winners are directly qualified for the final tournament in Qatar whereas sides on the second positions and the best two unqualified elevens in the Nations League are to play tie matches in an attempt to book tickets for World Cup 2022.
