Romanians are celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and the Romanian Navy Day

NAVY DAY – The Black Sea Area is an area of geostrategic importance to both NATO and the EU. As a member of both organizations, Romania is part of a common security and defense area, Romanias President Klaus Iohannis has stated in the Black Sea Port of Constanta, where he is attending festivities occasioned by the celebration of the Romanian Navy Day. Johannis has also said that ensuring national security and defense, which guarantees the safety of each Romanian, cannot be done without proper army equipment and modernization and constant training of the military. In turn, the Defense Minister Gabriel Les has stated that the Black Sea Region is unfortunately turning into an area of tension, pressure, risks and threats. Romanias strategic position on the Eastern border of the EU and NATO creates opportunities, but also challenges for the Romanian army and the naval forces in particular, the minister has said. The training ship Mircea has been the focus of attention today, as it celebrates 80 years since it was first used by the Romanian Navy. The Naval and Air Forces of Ukraine, Italy and the US are participating with several detachments in the exercises carried out at sea and in the festivities on the seafront, also to celebrate Navy Day. Similar events are taking place in Mangalia, Tulcea, Braila, Galati and Bucharest.
ASSUMPTION – Christian Orthodox and Greek – Catholic belivers in Romania are today celebrating the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven. Special masses have been held in churches and monasteries across Romania. This year, at the Nicula Monastery in Cluj county, the relics of the Blessed Iuliu Hossu, the first Romanian Cardinal, were brought to the place where he would meet every year with belivers coming from all over the country. Iuliu Hossu founded the Nicula Monastery in 1936. More than 2.2 million Romanians celebrate their name day today.
SAINT MARY – Some 21,000 employees of the Romanian Interior Ministry will work over the Saint Mary mini-holidays that started today. Police officers, gendarmes, firefighters and border police will be on special watch until Sunday. Greater attention will be paid to the road sector, where high traffic values are expected. Just like in the previous years, the crowded areas will be surveilled by helicopters. Over 1,200 traffic police with 300 radar devices will act daily in the field to avoid traffic jams and to streamline traffic as well as to ensure road safety. They will benefit from the helicopter support of the General Aviation Inspectorate, which will fly the busiest routes. Measures were also taken to ensure intervention in the event of medical emergencies. Over 4,600 firefighters and paramedics will be on duty and will work with the 3,000 means they have at their disposal to ensure a rapid response in emergency situations.
COOPERATION – Romania will re-launch this autumn the European Affairs Business Cooperation Format with France and Germany, the Romanian Minister of European Affairs, George Ciamba, has announced on Radio Romania. The Romanian official has stated that, given the big investments made by German and French companies in Romania, there is a solid basis for cooperation, not only economic, but also with regard to European affairs. George Ciamba has announced that the French Minister of European Affairs is expected to pay a visit to Bucharest next month.
TENNIS – Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, the world number four, meets American Madison Keys, 18th WTA, in the final round of the Cincinnati (Ohio / USA) tennis tournament, with some 3 million dollars in prize money. Last night, Halep defeated the Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova (43 WTA) 2-1. Also on Wednesday night, Madison Keys defeated the Russian Daria Kastkina (41 WTA), 6-4, 6-1. Halep played the final last year, when she was defeated by the Dutch Kiki Bertens.
