RALLY – Around 20 thousand people are protesting in front of the Government headquarters in Bucharest, against the ruling coalition made up of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) exactly one year since the large-scale protest rally against the PSD-ALDE Government, when the gendarmes intervened brutally and people were injured on both sides. Protests are also taking place in other cities across the country as well as abroad, in European capitals that are home to large Romanian communities. Organisers have said that today’s protest is a reaction to the events at the rally on August 10, 2018 and to the evolutions on the Romanian political and social scene. We remind you that the protest on August 10, 2018, was marked by violence and a disproportionate reaction of the security forces, which led to people being injured on both sides. Several criminal cases have been opened in relation to those events. Protests are also taking place in front of the Interior Ministry. The interim Interior Minister Mihai Fifor has twice called on the participants to protest peacefully and to observe the law. He has also said that Romania is a European state and its citizens have the right to freely express their views.
