Romania is still under alert for hot weather; Net average wages in Romania hold around 500 Euro

BUCHAREST — In Romania, in the north, center, northeast, west and mountain areas the weather is generally unstable, with dropping temperatures compared to the previous period. It is getting cloudy in those areas, with thunderstorms and gales. Rain and hail have been reported in isolated areas. In the rest of the country, excessive heat predominates, with the heat index still going over the critical threshold of 80. Meteorologists have kept in place the code orange alert for several counties in the southern half of the country, including the capital, while in the rest of the territory the code yellow alert is in place until Tuesday. Maximum temperatures are between 24 and 39 degrees Celsius. The noon reading in Bucharest was 32 degrees. So far, the extreme weather has made seven victims, with hundreds needing medical care.



BUCHAREST — The National Institute of Statistics has published new data on Monday. Average gross wages went up by 0.8% compared to last month, reaching almost 730 Euro, with net average salaries reaching 520 Euro. The highest wages are still in the IT and telecom industries, about 1,300 Euro, while the lowest are still in the hospitality industry, around 300 Euro. Data for May and June indicates that the increase in income was due to rainfall revenue.



BUCHAREST — The 14th edition of the ANONIMUL International Film Festival kicks off today in the Danube Delta, in the small town of Sfantu Gheorghe. At the opening gala, Mexican director Michel Franco, special guest of the festival, will get the ANONIMUL Trophy for his contribution to world cinema. The gala will be followed by the premiere in Romania of his movie Aprils Daughter, which earned him the Un Certain Regard award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. The one week festival ends with ceremonies for awards based on the publics vote.



OTTAWA — Romanian tennis player Simona Halep, number two in the world, was designated second favorite in the WTA tournament in Toronto, Canada, with 2.4 million dollars in prize money, starting on Monday. Halep goes straight to the second round, where she will meet the winner of the game between American player Madison Keys, ranked 21st, and Croatian player Mirjana Lucic-Baroni, ranked 30th. No less than five Romanian players feature in the qualifiers, Irina Begu, Sorana Cîrstea, Monica Niculescu, Ana Bogdan si Patricia Ţig.



ACCIDENT — One Romanian has died, one was injured, and two are missing after a boat they were on collided with another in the English Channel, according to the Foreign Ministry in Bucharest. The accident took place on Saturday night. The consular office in London is keeping in touch with local authorities, ready to grant consular support. The British authorities announced on Sunday afternoon that they have suspended their search for the two missing persons.



UNTOLD — The UNTOLD electronic music festival in Cluj, the biggest in the country, ends on Monday. The event is estimated to have gathered the largest audience since its inception in 2015. Around 200 Romanian and foreign artists performed on the 10 stages, the largest of which is 100 meters long and over 35 meters high. The festival was designated the best European festival at its first edition. In 2016, it had an audience of 300,000.
