Brussels visit — The Romanian PM Mihai Tudose will tell Brussels officials that Romania and the current government will observe all the commitments made to the EU. Next week Mihai Tudose will pay his first official visit to Brussels in his capacity as prime minister. He will have meetings with the main EU officials among whom the president of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and the president of the European Commision, Jean-Claude Juncker. The visit was announced by the minister delegate for European Affairs, Victor Negrescu, according to whom international cooperation and European affairs are the priories of the Romanian government.
Tennis — The best Romanian tennis player, Simona Halep, will play Monday in round four of the Wimbledon tournament against Viktoria Azarenka of Belarus, a former world no. 1 player. Second seed Halep is the only representative of Romania who has remained in the singles competition. In the women’s doubles, the pair Monica Niculescu/Hao-Ching Chan (Romania/Taiwan) will play on Monday as well in the eight finals against the pair Beatriz Haddad Maia/Ana Konjuh (Brazil/Croatia), while in the men’s doubles, also in the eighth finals, Romanian Florin Mergea and Pakistani Aisam-UI-Qureshi will take on the pair Lukasz Kubot/Marcelo Melo (Poland/Brazil).
Weather — The weather is hot in the west and south of Romania, and very hot locally in the southwest, where the thermal comfort index will reach 80 units. The highs of the day range from 26 to 37 degrees C, with a 30-degree reading in Bucharest at noon. Meteorologists have announced that in the first part of next week the west and south of the country will be affected by a heat wave, when noon temperatures will reach 37 degrees C. Last weekend Romania was faced with scorching days when temperatures exceeded 40 degrees C in the south.
Ankara – Thousands of people are expected, Sunday, to participate in a rally on the streets of Istanbul, which is actually the last stage of an anti-government protest rally that unfolded on a distance of 450 kms, the BBC reports. The rally started as a form of protest against the arrest of an MP from the opposition, but it has turned into an unprecedented rally against Erdogan’s regime. Tens of thousands of people marched from Ankara towards Istanbul protesting against what they consider to be the erosion of democracy in Turkey. Over 50 thousand people have been arrested and 140 thousand dismissed or suspended from their positions after last summer’s attempted coup d’etat. The opposition leader that started the rally and covered almost 20 kms said that the cleansing and the state of emergency imposed by Erdogan represented a “second coup d’etat”. President Erdogan sharply criticized the rally, claming that the protesters were supporting the terrorists, according to the BBC.
Festival — The Neversea electronic music festival, the biggest one in Europe organized on the beach, is coming to a close. In Constanta, on the Black Sea coast, tens of thousands of young people from Romania and abroad listened to Afrojack, Fatboy Slim, Years & Years, Inna, Mike Perry and Delia. Other artists performing as part of the festival on Sunday will be Jason Derulo, who has released the biggest number of songs in the past 3-4 years, and Dua Lipa.
