Today’s segment deals with a
programme that set out to tackle some of the problems children affected by
migration (CAM). Implemented at national level by Terre des hommes – Romania,
ICAM (Inclusion of Children Affected by Migration) seeks to increase the level
of integration and improve the learning capacity of children affected by
migration by enhancing the climate of convivencia in schools and at home, by
raising awareness of children’s rights and the law protecting them, and by
providing additional support in school and in the family for their social and
emotional learning and general well-being.
Supported by the UNHCR and funded
by the EU under the Erasmus+ programme, the programme was recommended by the
European Commission as an inspirational model in its guide of best practices
when it comes to the inclusion of Ukrainian refugees in schools. It was
implemented in Romania over December 2019 – May 2022.
To find out more about the
programme and its underlying methodology, I talked to Chris Gittins, the
director of the ICAM network and Director of the Northampton Centre for
Learning Behaviour at the University of Northampton, Francesca Nicora, project
manager on behalf of the national partner – Terre des hommes Romania, and
Claudia Iliescu, a history teacher and headmaster at a school in Măgurele,
Prahova County.
