On November 28, 2021 we mark the first annual celebration of the Day of the Mediterranean, in recognition of the Mediterranean culture, cooperation and diversity of the region. Over 50 events and initiatives will be organized to celebrate this first edition. The Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) will host, in Barcelona, a meeting of the regions foreign ministers and a conference on regional integration on November 29.

The Union launched the “Mediterranean in one word” campaign, which called on all citizens to think about the common Mediterranean identity, our origins and what unites the people of the region and to choose one single word to define the Mediterranean. Various personalities took part in the campaign, sharing the only one word they would use to describe the Mediterranean region. The list includes explorer Bertrand Piccard, violinist Ara Malikian, Nobel Peace Prize winner Ouided Bouchamaoui and singer Noa, among others.

“The Mediterranean is our home and our livelihood, our history and our future,” said UfM Secretary General, Nasser Kamel. “We’re facing great challenges as a region but we also hold great potential, and the Day of the Mediterranean is a fantastic opportunity to rejoice in all that we have done and can do if we work together” he added.

In 2020, the 42 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean declared November 28 as the official Day of the Mediterranean, which is marked annually, to remind us of the day when the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership was launched in 1995.
