The crisis in Syria and a potential international military intervention in that country topped the agenda of talks at the annual meeting of the Romanian diplomacy in Bucharest. The Romanian head of state, Traian Basescu, said that Romania will make common front with its allies if the UN proves the Damascus regime was involved in the chemical attack last week. The president said that Romania will present its stand at the end of the UN investigation in Syria. He pleaded for caution in relation to the situation in Syria, as there are over 10 thousand Romanian citizens living in that country. According to Traian Basescu, Romania’s joining the Shenghen agreement, which had been scheduled for March 2011, but which has been repeatedly postponed, remains a priority. The head of state also stressed the need for more attention to be paid to the relations with the countries in Central Asia and the partnership with the US. Traian Basescu:

“This partnership stands all the good chances of developing at a fast pace, thanks to the fact that the shield at Deveselu will be rendered operational in 2015 and also thanks to a military repositioning in Central Asia towards Europe and probably towards Romania.

The Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean stressed the continuity of Romanian diplomacy’s efforts to consolidate Romania’s profile within the European and Euro – Atlantic institutions, while at the same time effectively promoting national interests. He encouraged the ambassadors attending the meeting to do more and promote the interests of Romanian companies abroad and to help economic partners gain more confidence in the Romanian economy, which, despite the difficulties of late, is still a good place for investment.

The Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta called on the Romanian diplomats to promote Romania’s legitimate interests abroad and to be active with regard to economic and commercial cooperation. He told the participants to present the situation as it is, without hiding the problems, but also without allowing anybody to put Romania and its citizens into a light that may be interesting for the international media, but which is not at all fair or acceptable. As for the Romanian communities abroad, the Bucharest authorities stressed that they must be further involved in the One Romania project, launched last year, because they can play a significant role in remodeling Romanian society.
