Romanian national theaters gather in Chişinău, in the Republic of Moldova, for the 9th edition of the largest European festival of performing arts. The event, organized by the “Mihai Eminescu” National Theater from the Moldovan capital in collaboration with the Romanian Cultural Institute Representation on the left side of the Prut River and the Ministries of Culture from Romania and the Republic of Moldova, starts today and will come to an end on September 22. For the 4th consecutive year, the event is held under the high patronage of the Presidents of Romania and the Republic of Moldova, Klaus Iohannis and Maia Sandu, respectively, and this year’s edition has the motto “European Connections”.
For 13 days, the public in Chişinău will have the chance to attend 27 indoor and outdoor performances, listen to 8 radio show auditions and watch 6 premieres. Also, under the motto “Linguistic identities – European identity (memory, art, cultural management)” there will be 10 book launches and meetings with personalities from the theater and cultural domains, including Emil Boroghină, Ludmila Patlanjoglu, Matei Vișniec, Ana Blandiana, Aura Corbeanu, Ion Bogdan Lefter, Maria Zărnescu, Oana Borș and many others.
Romania is represented by the “I. L. Caragiale” National Theater from Bucharest, the “Vasile Alecsandri” National Theater from Iași, the “Radu Stanca” National Theater from Sibiu, the “Marin Sorescu” National Theater from Craiova, the “Lucian Blaga” National Theater from Cluj-Napoca, the Târgu-Mureș National Theatre, the Constanța State Theatre, the “Matei Vișniec” Theater in Suceava, the National Radio drama Theater and the Gigi Căciuleanu Romania Dance Company.
The hosts will bring to the fore 8 theater institutions, namely the “Mihai Eminescu” National Theater, the “Luceafărul” Republican Theater, the National Theater “Vasile Alecsandri” from Balti, the “Eugène Ionesco” National Theater, the “B.P. Haşdeu” Theater from Cahul, The National Satiricus Theater “I.L. Caragiale”, the “Alexie Mateevici” Theater and the Nameless Theater (Teatrul Fără Nume) – Ginta Latina Center.
The festival’s guest of honor is the “Ivan Franko” National Drama Theater from Kyiv. The Reunion of Romanian National Theaters was organized for the first time in 2015 and was inspired by the “Romanian Theater Bucharest – Iași – Chișinău” project, launched a year earlier by the two directors of the National Theaters in Bucharest and Chișinău, the great actor Ion Caramitru and the director Petru Hadârcă.
The project was conceived as a massive flow of performances from the West to Chișinău to offer alternative models to the avalanche of Russian propaganda messages and narratives that dominated the public and media space at that moment, to provide Moldovan citizens with democratic landmarks and anchor them in the free world space.
