For the past 86 years Radio Romania has spoken seriously. This is the motto, which beyond its intrinsic value, on every November the 1st acquires the value of an anniversary symbol. Born at a time when radio communication itself was in its infancy, the Romanian radio – eager to adopt and implement the latest technological innovations – has a fascinating story. In its 86 years of existence the public radio station has covered all the major events in Romania’s history. Its broadcasts went on uninterrupted even during WWll. On August the 23rd 1944, the public radio aired the king’s message to the Romanians, after the country had left the Axis to join the Allies. The voices of the anti-communist revolution of December 1989 were also heard all throughout the country thanks to Radio Romania’s broadcast. This is how Radio Romania has been built, says its president & CEO Ovidiu Miculescu.
“Since its early days in 1928 Radio Romania was built like that: to act and behave seriously, honestly, without any frivolities and speculations. Through its public mission but also through the active role it has played in society, Radio Romania cannot be otherwise. Just imagine a complicate situation for Romania, as it has happened along the years, and the public radio superficially addressing that situation or being biased– the message conveyed would be altered. And the extraordinary trust the Romanians have in this institution is based on these very traits.”
In its first year of existence, the public radio only had several dozens employees, today the institution boasts over 2000 employees working for Radio Romania News and Current Affairs, Radio Romania Culture, Radio Romania International, Radio Romania Music, The Village Antena, Radio Chisinau, broadcasting for the Romanians in the Republic of Moldova, regional stations, musical ensembles, a press agency and a label. For those who are working in this vast system, the buzzword is professionalism, as Ovidiu Miculescu has pointed out.
“I believe the force of the public radio resides in this, in its well-trained professional personnel, people dedicated to their job and I believe that’s the only way to go. This is the profile of Radio Romania journalists. Let’s not forget the public station is exclusively addressing the Romanians. We are here to serve them and we cannot toy with our mission, ever. “
86 years on, Radio Romania stands out in Romania’s media through balance, consistency and efficiency, features that define and ensures its continuity in a media landscape in continuous transformation.
