The celebration, on August 15, of Saint Mary, the protector of Romanian sailors, also occasioned a series of events dedicated to the Romanian Navy Day, in towns on the Black Sea Coast, by the Danube (Constanţa, Mangalia, Brăila, Galati and Tulcea), and also in Bucharest. Coming from all corners of the country, Romanians admired the show organized in Constanța and photographed and filmed the sea and air demonstrations, in which more than 2000 sailors, Romanian soldiers and from the allied forces deployed in Romania, 15 maritime military ships and riverboats, Coast Guard vessels, F-16 fighter jets, Puma Naval helicopters and paratroopers participated.

The joint naval exercise – “Romanian Naval Forces 2024”, held on the seafront in front of the Fleet Command in Constanţa, was also attended by the Head of State, Klaus Iohannis, the Senate Speaker Nicolae Ciucă, and the Ministers of Defense and Interior, Angel Tîlvăr and Cătălin Predoiu. “Romania is today a safe and stable country, irreversibly engaged on the path of democratic development, together with partners and allies from the EU and NATO, even if we live in times marked by multiple security challenges”, said President Iohannis, also stressing: ” Here, on the shores of the Black Sea, in the vicinity of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, we see more clearly than ever the results of Romania’s political, diplomatic and military efforts in recent years”

President Iohannis: “Today, our country benefits from the most solid security guarantees, and Romanian citizens are defended and protected against any potential threats.”

On Navy Day, President Klaus Iohannis told the sailors that the devotion, tenacity and spirit of sacrifice that define them are an example of excellence, and the Romanian Naval Forces a symbol of national strength and resilience.

For his part, the Minister of National Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, stressed that the role of the Romanian Naval Forces is essential in the national security architecture

Angel Tîlvăr: “The transformation of the Black Sea from an area of cooperation into an area of conflict, as a result of the aggressive actions of the Russian Federation, required rethinking and adapting our naval security posture.”

On August 15, on the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu did not participate in the festivities in Constanţa, but he atteded the Holy Liturgy at the Văratec Monastery in Moldavia (eastern Romania), where from he conveyed a message of gratitude and respect for the daily effort of all Romanian sailors, military or civilian.

In the Mangalia tourist port, several games and seamanship competitions took place, as well as an exhibition of military equipment and interactive workshops, and in the capital, the Romanian Navy Day was marked by a military and religious ceremony organized at the Monument to the Seamen’s Heroes in the King Michael I Park. The Navy Day celebrations ended throughout the country with torch carrying ceremonies. (MI)
