The price of electricity will be capped in Romania as of January 1st, 2023. After President Klaus Iohannis promulgated a law in this respect, the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE) has issued the form that must be filled in by consumers, in order to benefit the capped price as of 2023. In keeping with the new provisions, the current price caps of 13 eurocents/kWh for medium consumption levels and 16 eurocents/kWh for small consumption levels will be kept in place. The novelty is that the price will be capped at 26 eurocents also for consumption levels of more than 300 kWh.

Household consumers with a single consumption point benefit the capped price automatically. Household consumers who have both a residency and a domicile address, can benefit the capped price for only one of the two addresses, based on a request submitted to the electricity supplier. The ANRE vice president, Zoltán Nagy, explained on Radio Romania which are the options for people with more than one consumption points registered on their name or people who live in rented properties: “When a person has several consumption places on their name, the cap will apply to their domicile address. If customers want it applied for another consumption point, they will have to submit a request and a statement in this respect, to their supplier. People living in rented houses must have the contract on their name and not on the owner’s name. They must also have small or medium consumption levels in order for the capped tariff to apply.”

ANRE has also announced that people using medical devices they need for treatment, families with at lest three children and single-parent families with at least one child must also submit a request and a statement to the energy supplier. The documents can be submitted online or in physical format and the forms can be downloaded from the internet page www.anre.ro.

The cap will apply the month after the request is submitted. According to ANRE, only about 10% of consumers will have to submit such requests, with the rest of them benefiting the measure automatically, as they fall within the set consumption limits. According to official data, around 5 million people will benefit the minimum cap level, some 2.8 million the medium level while 800,000 Romanians will have to pay the maximum price. (EE)
