The Gaudeamus Book Fair Caravan has started, its first stop being Craiova, southern Romania.
România Internațional, 27.02.2019, 12:53
The Gaudeamus Book Fair Caravan, one
of the most popular events of its kind in the country and organised by Radio
Romania, has started, like every year, in the southern city of Craiova. It will
be hosted here in its usual venue, the foyer of the Marin Sorescu National Theatre,
until Sunday. This year’s edition is held under the aegis of The Book Year in
Romania.
Organised by Radio Romania and Radio
Romania Oltenia Craiova, this is the first in the wider series of Gaudeamus
fairs held all over the country. Gaudeamus Radio Romania in Craiova has become the
most important event of its kind in Craiova. Having reached its 17th
edition, the fair has totalled some 210 thousand visitors, playing host to
hundreds of events so far. This year the book fair features over 50 publishers,
a record for the history of the fair, and offers dozens of events bringing
together some of the well-established figures of Romanian literature, which
will turn Craiova into a landmark of Romania’s book market.
Participants will exhibit volumes
addressing all ages and tastes, some of which are published in Romanian for the
first time. Visitors can choose from a wide variety of books which are
representative for the book sector, including books, audiobooks, CDs, DVDs and educational
games, many of which can make for a very inspired gift for our upcoming
traditional celebration of spring, Martisor, due on March 1. Publishers are
offering major discounts, special packages and promotional offers. The agenda
includes the regional final of the Mircea Nedelciu National Reading Contest
addressing high-school students, the project A-grade Guests: Romania’s Olympic
students, attended by students in the region of Oltenia who have won awards in
international contests in various subjects, the Miss Reading contest as well
as a raffle offering attractive prizes.
Besides, the fair will feature a new
episode in the series called Books Are Coming Home. This is a project started
back in 2010 by means of which all the books donated as part of the fair are
taken to public libraries, especially in rural areas, that lack the funding to
make new book purchases. Started in 2000, the Gaudeamus Book Fair Caravan
consists of a series of book fairs devoted to books and education, held in
prestigious cultural and university centres in areas where the Romanian Radio
Broadcasting Corporation has regional stations: Craiova, Oradea, Cluj-Napoca,
Timisoara, Constanta and Brasov.
The most important edition of the
Gaudeamus fair is held every year in November in the capital city Bucharest,
bringing together the largest number of domestic and international publishers
and playing host to hundreds of events.
