Romania’s football champions CFR Cluj were
eliminated from Europa League after being defeated by Red Star Belgrade 2-1 on
Thursday, on home turf, in the second match of the competition’s playoffs. The
Romanians had also lost the first match, nil-4, in Belgrade. Still, CFR Cluj will
take part in the groups of Europa Conference League. According to Digi Sport TV
station, the team’s coach, Marius Sumudica was dismissed, following Thursday’s defeat.
A number of matches, counting for the
seventh leg of Romania’s first league will be held this weekend. On Friday, FC
Voluntari will be up against Chindia Targoviste, and FC U Craiova will take on
Farul Constanta. On Saturday, Dinamo Bucharest will take on FC Arges on home
turf, while Rapid Bucharest will be up against Universitatea Craiova on the
national arena in the capital city. Sunday will see Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe against
FC Botosani and later in the day Gaz Metan against UTA Arad. CFR Cluj lead the
tables with 18 points, followed by Rapid wit/h 12.
We move on to the Parlaympic Games in
Tokyo. Romanian’s cyclist Eduard Novak ranked 11th in the 1,000-m
race. Novak, aged 45, who won medals at the 2008 and 2012 editions of the
Paralympic Games, is minister of the youth and sports in the Romanian
government.
News from handball now. At the end of this
week in Braila, the women’s handball teams Rapid and CFR will play the semi-finals
in Romania’s Handball Cup. The other semifinal, will see Handbal Club Zalau
against Gloria Buzau. The finals will be held on Sunday. (EE)
