At
the international table tennis tournament in Frankfurt, Romanian player Bernadette
Szőcs qualified for the quarter-finals after beating the reigning Olympic
champion, Chinese Meng Chen, 3-2. It was the second victory of the Romanian
sportswoman against Chen, currently world number two. Bernadette Szőcs,
currently no. 12th in the world ranking, represents Romania’s main hope for an
Olympic medal in table tennis, next year, in Paris.
The Romanian men’s handball team has
two friendly games scheduled this week in preparation for the participation in
the European Championship in Germany, which will take place in January. On
Thursday, the tricolor handball players were defeated, in Podgorica, by the
National Team of Montenegro with 38 to 28. On Saturday, in Toulouse, Romania
will take on France.
In the Romanian Football Cup, three
games took place on Thursday. In group B, CSM Alexandria, from the second
league, beat FC Botoşani 2-1 at home, and the Cluj derby between Universitatea
and CFR ended in a draw, 1-1. In group D, Gloria Buzău, from the second
echelon, defeated, at home, the champion of the last edition of the
Superleague, Farul Constanţa, 1-0. The top two teams from each group move to
the quarter-finals.
During the weekend, there are games counting for the 15th
stage of the Superligue. Friday will see just one match: Politehnica Iași with
Oţelul Galati. On Saturday, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe will face Petrolul Ploiesti
on home turf. The match of the day will take place in Craiova, where Universitatea
will take on FC U 1948. Three games are scheduled for Sunday. Universitatea Cluj
take on the FC Voluntari team and Farul Constanţa will then play against FC
Botoşani in Ovidiu. The day will end with the stage derby, hosted by the
National Arena in Bucharest, between FCSB and Rapid. On Monday, the last two
games of the stage: UTA Arad and Dinamo Bucharest, in Oradea, and Hermannstadt and
CFR Cluj, in Sibiu. FCSB remains leader of the rankings, with 31 points, followed by CFR with 30, and
Rapid, with 26. (MI)
