The Romanian women’s basketball team Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe
on Thursday qualified to the FIBA EuroCup round of 16 after winning 90-44
against Basket Namur Capitale of Belgium at home. The Romanian champions had
won the first leg 93-74. In the next phase, Sepsi will go up against LDLC ASVEL
of France, which in the previous round knocked out Arka Godynia of Poland in two
legs, 86-62 at home and 91-72 away from home. The first leg of the round of 16
is scheduled for January 26 in Lyon, while the return leg will be played on
February 1 in Sfântu Gheorghe.
Three Romanian handball teams are this weekend competing in
women’s European inter-club competitions. In Champions League, in Group A, CSM
Bucharest is playing Odense of Denmark at home. CSM ranks first in the group
tables with 17 points, followed by the winner of last year’s edition, Vipers
Kristiansand of Norway with 16 points. Odense is in third place with 14 points.
On Sunday, in Group B, Rapid Bucharest is playing Esbjerg of
Denmark away from home. Rapid ranks 3rd in the tables with 16
points, the same as the Hungarian team Győr in second place, one point behind
the group leader Metz of France. Esbjerg ranks 4th with 14 points.
Finally, Romania’s representative in the EHF European League,
SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea, is playing Paris 92 of France away from home in Group D. In
the previous fixture, SCM won 40-30 against Vác of Hungary, whereas the French
team sustained a 24-28 defeat to Germany’s Thüringer.
This weekend, Romanian football clubs continue to play
friendly matches as part of the winter training campaign. The Romanian Cup
winners, Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe, drew 2-2 against Gabala of Azerbaijan in a
match played in Turkey. Mario Rondon and Marius Ștefănescu scored the goals for
Sepsi. In the previous friendly match, Sepsi had won 2-1 against Radomiak Radom
of Poland. On Sunday, Sepsi will play Bohemians Prague of the Czech Republic in
