The Romanian rugby team is playing Spain on Sunday in the bronze final of Rugby Europe Championship, in a match hosted by Jean Bouin stadium in Paris. “The Oaks” are trying to secure the bronze medal after ranking second in Group B, after Portugal, the team that will play Georgia in the final of Rugby Europe Championship. Last year, Georgia won the competition, Portugal grabbed silver and “the Oaks” won bronze.
In the regional Erste League in ice hockey, Romanian clubs are competing in the quarterfinals on Saturday. In Brașov, the local side Corona is taking on the Jegesmedvek of Hungary. The score is 2-2 on aggregate after the Hungarian side won the first two games in Brașov, and Corona won both matches played in Miskolc. In Budapest, SC Miercurea Ciuc will go up against Jegkorong Akademia. The team from Harghita leads 2-1. The quarterfinals are held in best-of-seven series. The defending champions, ACSH Gheorgheni, is the first team to have already secured qualification to the semi-finals after leading 4-0 on aggregate against the Hungarian side Ujpest.
This weekend will see the first matches of the Romanian Football Superleague group phase. In Group 1, on Friday, Rapid Bucharest is playing Farul Constanța. On Saturday, Universitatea Craiova will play CFR Cluj, while FCSB will take on Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe at home. FCSB tops the league tables with 32 points, followed by Rapid with 28, CFR with 27, Universitatea Craiova with 25, and Farul and Sepsi, each with 22 points. In Group 2, Universitatea Cluj will play FC Botoșani on Friday. On Saturday, Oțelul Galați will play FC Hermannstadt. On Monday, UTA Arad will go up against FC Voluntari, while Petrolul Ploiești will play FC U Craiova. Universitatea Cluj is in top position with 21 points, followed by UTA and Hermannstadt, both with 20 points, and Petrolul with 18 points. Poli Iași and Oțelul Galați are next with 17 points. FC U Craiova, and Dinamo Bucharest, with 16 and 15 points, respectively, are currently in place for relegation playoffs. FC Voluntari ranks 9th with 14 points, followed by FC Botoșani with 11 points, both teams currently in positions that are directly relegated. (VP)
