The southeastern Romanian town of Braila is these days hosting the Carpati Trophy in womens handball. This year, the trophys four-party format includes Romanias A and B teams, as well as the teams of Angola and Japan. The latter teams may not be top-notch squads in womens handball, but they can still ruffle a few feathers in the competition. We recall that three years ago, in the Rio Olympics, Angola defeated Romania…

Romanias Swedish head-coach Tomas Ryde will once again supervise his team at the aforementioned tournament. Ryde is for the second time around at the helm of Romanias womens national squad. We recall Ryde took our national team to the final stages of the World Championship in Denmark in 2015, when Romania walked away with bronze. Ryde was also at the helm of Romanias womens handball team that competed in the Rio Olympics in 2016.

The European Seniors Rowing Championships are underway in Lucerne, Switzerland. Travelling to Switzerland is a 41-strong Romanian delegation. Proving their mettle in the aforementioned event will be 11 crews, five in mens and six in the womens version of the competition. We recall that in 2018, at the European championships in Glasgow, Romania stepped onto the first step of the podium in the nations competition, with a record of seven medals, of which three were gold, two were silver and five bronze. Back then, gold went to womens coxless pair and coxed eight crews. Another gold medal was grabbed by mens four coxless crew. Stepping onto the second step of the podium were the mens double sculls and the womens four coxless crews. Romanias mens coxed eight and coxless pair crews won bronze in Glasgow.

This coming weekend will see matches being played, counting towards the last round of League Ones Group 1. On Friday, Poli Iasi face FC Botosani and Dinamo Bucharest take on FC Voluntari. On Sunday, FC Hermannstadt Sibiu play a home fixture against Dunarea Calarasi. In the as-it-stands table, FC Hermannstadt are the last-but-one team, a position that takes them straight into the second League. Dunarea Calarasi are placed one notch up, and are being given one more chance to maintain their League One position, as a result of the play-off fixture they played against the 3rd-placed team in League two. Dunarea have a point more than Hermannstadt Sibiu, who are in dire need of a win if they still want to keep their hopes alive for a position in League One.

On Sunday evening, in the last match of the round, which is also the last fixture of the 2018-2019 edition of the championship, Gaz Metan Medias play a home game against Concordia Chiajna.
