Bucharest is
hosting the Superbet Chess Classic Romania 2022, the first of the five stages
of the 2022 Grand Chess Tour. 9 and of the world’s top 12 chess players are
taking part in the event, including Alireza Firouzja of France, world no. 3,
and Americans Fabiano Caruana, world no. 4, and Levon Aronian, world no. 6.
Romania is represented by 20-year-old grandmaster Bogdan Deac, world no. 68 in
ELO standings. The competition will unfold in tournament format, meaning each
player is expected to play all the other players enrolled. The player with the
highest score at the end of the tournament will win the trophy. Total prizes
stand at some 350 thousand USD.

In news from
women’s handball, CSM Bucharest on Sunday is playing the return leg against
Team Esbjerg of Denmark in the Champions League quarterfinals. The Danish team
won the first leg 26-25 in Bucharest, due to a last-minute goal. Team Esbjerg
is now undefeated in the last 13 games. Since 2014, no team from Denmark has
qualified to the Champions League Final Four.
This weekend will
see matches counting towards the eighth round of group phase in the Romanian
football championship. On Friday, in Group 2, Gaz Metan Mediaș will play Academica Clinceni, while FC Botoșani
will play Dinamo Bucharest. On Saturday, CS Mioveni will take on UTA Arad. On
Sunday, in Sfântu Gheorghe, Sepsi will play Chindia Târgoviște. On Monday,
Rapid Bucharest is playing FCU Craiova at home. Rapid tops the tables in Group
2 with 39 points, followed by FC Botoșani with 38.
In
Group 1, on Saturday, Farul Constanța is playing FC Voluntari in Ovidiu. FC Argeș will play CFR Cluj at home. On
Sunday, in Craiova, the local side Universitatea is playing FCSB. CFR tops the
tables in Group 1, 2 points ahead FCSB and 6 points ahead Universitatea
