Saturday is the
last day of the European Weightlifting Championships hosted by Batumi, Georgia.
The Romanian delegation’s record has already exceeded all expectations, as
after six competition days, the Romanian wrestlers walked away with 14 medals.
Six are gold medals, three of which won by Elena Andries in the 49-kilogram
category, while the other three went to Loredana Toma, in the 64-kilogram
category. The 14-strong Romanian delegation has thus had the opportunity to
amass points for the 2020 edition of the Olympics, to be held in Japan.
This coming
weekend, all through to Sunday, the European Wrestling Championships are in
full swing in Romanian capital city Bucharest. On Thursday, Romania’s Andreea
Beatrice Ana won a bronze medal in the 55-kilogram category. In the 3rd-place
confrontation, Andreea defeated Mariana Dragutan of the Republic of Moldova.
It’s news from
gymnastics now. On Thursday, the Romanian gymnast Denisa Golgota qualified for
the all-round finals, the vault, beam and floor events, at the Artistic
gymnastics European Championships hosted by the Polish town of Szczecin. Golgota
competes in the all-round finals with the ninth-best score. In the vault
finals, Golgota gained admission with the 8th-best score, the same
as in the beam and floor events. We recall that at the European Championships
in Glasgow in 2019, Denisa Golgota won two medals for the Romania delegation: silver
in the floor event and bronze in the vault event.
In handball, the
Romanian team defeated Lithuania, 28-23 in Targoviste on Thursday night, in the 6th group of the 2020 European
Championship’s preliminaries. The win occurred in the wake of two defeats by
France and Portugal, respectively. Portugal is top of the group with 6 points,
followed by France, with 4, Romania, with 2 and Lithuania, with zero points on
its record sheet. Two matches are scheduled this coming Sundae, when France
faces Portugal, while Lithuania takes on Romania.
This coming Sunday,
the Romanian women’s handball team CSM Bucharest is travelling to France for
the return leg against Metz, in a fixture counting towards the Champions
League’s quarterfinals. We recall that in this past Friday’s leg in Bucharest,
Metz secured a 31-26 win against CSM Bucharest.
We go out with news
from football. The League One derby will be played on Sunday. In Group 1’s
fifth round, CFR Cluj plays a home game against FCSB. Also in Group 1 on
Saturday Viitorul Constanta plays a home fixture against Universitatea Craiova,
while on Monday, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe takes on Astra Giurgiu at home. In the
as-it-stands table, CFR Cluj are three points up from FCSB. In Group 2 on Friday, Concordia Chiajna faces
Dunarea Calarasi, while Politehnica Iasi go against Dinamo Bucharest. On
Saturday, FC Hermannstadt travels to Botosani, in the north, for a match
against the local side Football Club. On Sunday, FC Voluntari plays a home match
against Gaz Metan Medias.
