Epee fencer Ana Maria Popescu this
past Thursday was eliminated in the round of 16 at the World Fencing Championships,
underway in Budapest. Ana Maria Popescu sustained a 6-15 defeat by Ukraine’s
Olena Krivitsa. The other Romanian who made it to the epee main draw was edged
out by US opponent Katharine Holmes, 15-12. In the men’s saber event, Tiberiu
Dolniceanu was unable to move past the round of 16 since he sustained a 13-15
defeat by Max Hartung of Germany. The other three Romanians who made it to the
main draw, Iulian Teodosiu, Florin Zalomir and Alin Badea were eliminated from
the very first round.
The Romanian football teams playing
in Europa League have made it to the second preliminary round. In the second
leg of the first preliminary round, Universitatea Craiova grabbed a 3-2 home
win against Azeri opponents Sabail. Scoring for Universitatea Craiova were Alexandru
Cicâldău, Bogdan Vătăjelu and Portuguese Carlos Fortes. Scoring for Sabail were
Aghabala Ramazanov and French Dylan Duventru. In Europa League’s second
preliminary round, Universitatea Craiova are pitted against Hungarian opponents
Honved Budapest. In the first round, Universitatea Craiova grabbed another 3-2
win away from home.
FCSB is the other Romanian team that
advanced in the competition. FCSB had no problem grabbing a 2-1 away win
against Milsami Orhei of Republic of Moldova. We recall FCSB had won the first
round in Giurgiu, 2-nil, thanks to goals scored by Cristian Dumitru and Razvan
Oaida. Milsami’s only goal was scored by Vadim Bolohan. FCSB will next take on
Israeli opponents Maccabi Tel Aviv.
This coming weekend will see matches
being played, counting towards the second round of domestic League One’s
championship. On Friday, FC Hermannstadt play Gaz Metan Medias and Chindia
Targoviste are pitted against Viitorul Constanta. On Saturday, FC Botosani play
a home game against FC Voluntari, while CFR Cluj face Academica Clinceni, in a
fixture hosted by the stadium in Voluntari. On Sunday, Poli Iasi play a home
game against Astra Giurgiu, while on the National Arena in Bucharest Dinamo
face Universitatea Craiova. In the round’s last game on Minday, Sepsi Sfantu
Gheorghe are pitted against FCSB.
