At the Australian
Open in Melbourne, the young Romanian tennis player Filip Jianu failed to
qualify for the singles final in the juniors category, where he was 4th-seed.
In this past Friday’s semifinals, Jianu sustained a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 defeat by the
14th-seed Emilio Nava of the US. Filip Jianu was unable to go past the men’s
doubles semifinals either, where he paired up with Spain’s Nicolas Alvarez
Varona. They were defeated by the all-American pair made of Cannon Kingsley and
Emilio Nava, 6-3, 6-4.
In men’s handball, Steaua
Bucharest have yet again failed to grab a win in the SEHA League regional
competition. On Thursday, on home turf in Chiajna, Steaua sustained a 19-31
defeat by Croatian opponents RK Nexe Našice. The Croats are the runner-up team
in the League tables, while Vardar Skopje are at the top. Steaua’s next fixture
is scheduled for February the 5th, when the Romanians take on Belarus
opponents Meshkov Brest, away from home.
We continue with
women’s handball. In the Champions League’s main group 2, on Saturday, CSM
Bucharest will face the Hungarian side Gyor, away from home. Currently, Gyor
top the group, with 2 points more that CSM Bucharest on their record sheet.
Having sustained a serious injury at the European Championship in December,
Cristina Neagu will not be on the pitch for the game.
In the EHF Cup’s
Group A on Saturday, Măgura Cisnădie travel to Norway for their match against
Storhamar. We recall that Magura Cisnadie have so far lost all the three group
fixtures. In Group D, cup holders SCM Craiova travel to Koprivnica, in Croatia,
for their game against Podravka. With three wins in a similar number of games,
Podravka are at the top of the table in group D, while SCM Craiova are at the
bottom, with only one win in three games played.
We go out with news
from football, as the Romanian football teams continue their training stages in
countries with a warmer climate. In their last game in Spain’s Malaga, FCSB drew
against Dinamo Kiev, 1-all. In Antalya, Viitorul Constanta sustained a 1-2
defeat by Georgia’s champions Saburtalo, as part of their training stage in
Turkey. Also in Antalya, part of the ongoing training stage, FC Voluntari lost
the last friendly match with the Hungarians from Szombathelyi Haladás.
