We carry on with news from tennis. Romania’s Davis Cup team in Cluj this coming weekend faces Poland. The match is crucial for promoting to the Europe-Africa Zone’s Group I, an echelon Romania was demoted from, in 2017. Romanian team’s only novelty is ATP men’s singles rankings 609th-palced Bogdan Ionuţ Apostol. Also summoned for the singles’ games were ATP 81st-ranked Marius Copil and Adrian Ungur, currently 674th-placed according to the ATP rankings. In the men’s doubles, Gabriel Trifu counts on 25th-ranked Horia Tecau and Florin Mergea, currently 689th-ranked according to the ATP classification. We recall that in July 2015 Mergea was7th-placed according to world rankings, while in 2016 he emerged as Olympic vice-champion in Rio.
The Romanian news agency Agerpress reports that in 2018 Adrian Ungur played only two matches, of which he won one in Cluj in April against Morocco’s Lamine Ouahad, and another one, last month, against Mihnea Turcu in a futures tournament in Bucharest. After that, Ungur retired from competition. We recall that Adrian Ungur lost a doubles match in the aforementioned tournament, pairing up with Matei Georgescu.
