Romania has only one athlete left in the Roland Garros singles
tournament. On Thursday, in the second round of the competition, Irina Begu, no
63 WTA, had a hard time defeating Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova, no 31 in the
world and seed number 30, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. In the 3rd round, the
Romanian player will be facing Leolia Jeanjean of France, no. 227 WTA. The
French player produced a major surprise on Thursday, defeating Karolina
Pliskova, of the Czech Republic, 6-2, 6-2.
Also on Thursday, Simona Halep, seed no 19, left the competition. She was
outplayed in the second round by the 19-year old Chinese player Qinwen Zheng, number
74 in the world, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1. On Wednesday, also in the 2nd round,
Sorana Cîrstea had been defeated by Sloane Stephens, of the US, 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
In volleyball, on Saturday in Budapest the Romanian national women’s
team is playing against Hungary in Group C of the Golden League. The Romanians
outplayed Ukraine, 3-2 on Tuesday in Alexandria, but the Ukrainian players made
a comeback on Wednesday, when they won 3-1 in Alexandria.
Sunday will bring the final standings of the top 2 leagues in Romanian
football, with the second leg of the playoff round to decide who stays and who
qualifies into League 1. The first match will be played in Ploieşti, pitting
League 1 team Chindia Târgovişte against Concordia Chiajna, from the second
division. Last week, Concordia won at home 2-1, thanks to the goals scored by
Daniel Florea and Andrei Piţian. Adrian Voicu scored for the opposing team.
In the
second playoff match, taking place in Bucharest, top-leaguer Dinamo are facing
Universitatea Cluj, from the second league. In the first leg in Cluj, Universitatea
won 2-0, with goals scored by the Belgian Martin Remacle and the Moldovan
