The
International Weightlifting Federation issued a one-year suspension against the
Romanian Weightlifting Federation as a consequence of anti-doping violations. As
a result, Romanian weightlifters will not be able to compete in the Tokyo
Olympics. The International Weightlifting Federation writes in a statement that the case against the
Romanian federation is grounded on five violations of the anti-doping rules
committed in 2012 by five different athletes, with anabolic steroids being
detected in the athletes’ samples. Four violations were from the four athletes
representing Romania at the London Olympic Games in 2012, namely Florin Croitoru, Gabriel Sîncrăian, Răzvan
Martin and Roxana Cocoş. The findings were reported in 2019 as part of the re-analysis
programme carried out by the International Olympic Committee. The ban can be
appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The International Weightlifting
Federation has already suspended three other national federations, namely of
Thailand, Egypt and Malaysia.
In the fourth match of the men’s basketball National League final, CSM CSU Oradea on Thursday defeated U-BT
Cluj-Napoca 64-60, with the two sides now being on equal points in the general
classification. Oradea had won a second home match on 15th June,
75-71, while Cluj-Napoca had won the first two matches of the final at home, 73-62
and 103-80. The final is played in the best-of-five format, with the decisive
match to be held on Sunday in Cluj.
Four of the
seven Romanian athletes who have qualified for the Tokyo Olympic Games will be
competing in the European Team Athletics Championships 1st League hosted by Cluj Napoca on
Saturday and Sunday. They are Florentina Iuşco in the long jump, Daniela Stanciu in the high jump, Alin
Firfirică in the discus throw and Rareş Andrei Toader in the shot put. The competition
held in Cluj Napoca takes place ten days before the list of athletes qualified
for the Olympics is finalised, namely 29th June. (CM)
