A look at the most important events due this weekend

This weekend will see matches counting towards the third
round of the women’s Champions League in handball. On Saturday, in Group A,
Romanian champions CSM Bucharest will take on Győr of Hungary at home, the team
favorite to win this year’s edition. The team from Hungary has won the first
two matches played this season: 24-23 against Brest Bretagne of France away
from home, and 35-23 at home against Debrecen. In Group B, Rapid Bucharest will
face Ikast of Denmark on home turf. The Danish team provided the first big
upset in the first phase, winning 30-26 against the defending European
champions, Vipers Kristiansand of Norway. In the second fixture, Ikast won
again 39-36 against Metz of France away from home. CSM Bucharest won the first
match 28-24 against Odense of Denmark, then lost 24-26 to Bietigheim of Germany
away from home. Rapid lost the first match to Esbjerg of Denmark 28-30, then
won against Zagłębie Lubin of Poland at home 26-25.
This weekend will also see matches counting towards the 10th
round of the Romanian Football Superleague. On Friday, FCU Craiova 1948 will play Oțelul Galați, while
Dinamo Bucharest will take on Farul Constanța. On Saturday, FC Voluntari is
playing Politehnica Iași at home, FC Botoșani will take on UTA Arad on home
turf, while Universitatea Cluj will go up against Universitatea Craiova at
home. On Sunday, Petrolul Ploiești will play FC Hermannstadt, while Sepsi Sfântu
Gheorghe will take on FCSB. In the round’s final match, Rapid Bucharest will play CFR Cluj at home. (VP)
