Three
Romanian athletes secured qualification in wrestling events at the Tokyo
Olympics – Albert Saritov in the 97-kg category, Andreea Ana in the 53-kg
category, both in the freestyle event, and Alin Alexuc-Ciurariu in the 130-kg
category, in the Greek-Roman event. The three secured their tickets to Japan at
the pre-Olympic tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria, after qualifying to the finals.
Joining them as part of Romania’s wrestling delegation will also be Alina Vuc,
who will represent Romania in the 50-kg category.
In news from
women’s handball, Minaur Baia Mare ended the EHF European League in 3rd
place. In the bronze final, the team from northern Romania won 33-31 against
Herning-Ikaast of Denmark. The trophy went to Nantes of France, who won 36-31 against
Siofok of Hungary in the finals. The semi-finals and the finals of European
League were hosted by the city of Baia Mare.
This weekend
saw a new round in the group phase of the Romanian football championship. On
Saturday, in Group 2, Gaz Metan Mediaș won 2-1 against Astra Giurgiu, while
Dinamo Bucharest won 2-nil against FC Hermannstadt. On Sunday, in Arad, Poli Iași
defeated UTA Arad 2-1, while in Ovidiu, Viitorul defeated FC Argeș 1-nil. On
Monday, FC Voluntari will play Chindia Târgoviște. FC Hermannstadt and Poli Iași
are in the last two positions which will be relegated to the second league. FC
Voluntari and Astra Giurgiu, with 23 and 24 points, respectively, will play in
the playoffs to remain in the first league. In Group 1, on Sunday, FC Botoșani
won against Universitatea Craiova away from home. On Monday, CFR Cluj will take
on Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe while FCSB will play Academica Clinceni. CFR tops the league
tables, followed by runner-up FCSB. (V.P.)
