Romanian football club CFR Cluj, the defending champion, has
consolidated its position as leader of the domestic championship following
Sunday’s 1-nil win over runner-up in the tables FCSB. The win for Cluj was owed
to an own-goal by Ovidiu Popescu on minute 23.
The host team dominated the game all throughout tactically,
defending well against any mounted attacks. And whenever FCSB strikers did
shoot on goal, CFR goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis managed to save each time.
Throughout the match, Florin Tanase, Darius Olaru, Florinel Coman and Dennis
Man missed important scoring opportunities, turning Arlauskis into man of the
match. The game was played in front of empty stands. The organizers played the
recording of the ambience for the match pitting CFR against FC Seville in
Europe League. Following Sunday’s match, CFR has a 7-point lead over the teams
in second and third place, FCSB and Universitatea Craiova, respectively. CFR
also extended its undefeated streak to 9 games, reporting six wins and three
draws.
Let us further note the other results of this round of the
domestic football championship. Friday’s match in Group 1 pitting Universitatea
Craiova against FC Botosani was postponed after the physician for the visiting
side tested positive for COVID-19. Dinamo Bucharest versus Chindia Targoviste
was also postponed in Group 2, after a member of Dinamo’s technical staff
tested positive for coronavirus. On Saturday, in Group 2, FC Voluntari defeated
Academica Clinceni 3-nil, while in Sfantu Gheorghe Sepsi drew 1-all against FC
Hermannstadt. On Sunday, in Ovidiu, Viitorul Constanta edged out Politehnica
Iasi 2-1. On Monday, Astra Giurgiu is playing Gaz Metan Medias in Group 2.
