This weekend was packed with events involving Romanian athletes, although most of the results were below par. Of course, the most notable achievement was the Romanian Fed Cup team’s qualification to the semi-finals after a win against the Czech Republic.
RUGBY – In rugby, Romania’s national team lost 19-8 to Georgia on Saturday in Cluj, in their first match of the 2019 Rugby Europe International Championship. The points for Romania were scored by Florin Vlaicu who converted three tries. Romania will next play Germany on February 16 in Botosani.
HANDBALL – From the world of handball, Romanian champions CSM Bucharest grabbed a 30-18 away win against Germany’s Thuringer in Champions League Group 2. The top scorer for the Romanian side was Jovanka Radicevic with 13 goals. CSM Bucharest is now 2nd placed in the group tables with 10 points, ahead of the last three group fixtures. Ranking first is Hungary’s Gyor with 13 points. Vipers Kristiansand of Norway is third-placed with 8 points, followed by Ferencvaros of Hungary with 7 points, Krim Ljubljana of Slovenia with 3 points and Thuringer with 1 point. Romania’s last representative in the EHF Cup has now been knocked out of the competition. Magura Cisnadie was bottom-of-the-tables in Group A with six defeats in six matches. On Sunday, the Romanians lost to Germany’s Bietigheim, 17-29 at home. In Group D, title holder SCM Craiova were ranked third. In their last fixture, the Romanians won 26-23 against Spain’s Bera Bera at home.
FOOTBALL – This weekend saw matches counting towards the 23rd round of the Romanian First League. On Friday, Astra Giurgiu won 3-nil against Viitorul Constanta. Dinamo Bucharest won 1-nil against Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe away from home on Saturday. On Sunday, Dunarea Calarasi won narrowly 2-1 against Concordia Chiajna at home. Poli Iasi won 1-nil against Gaz Metan Medias, while Universitatea Craiova won 2-nil against the team in top position, CFR Cluj.
