EPEE – The Romanian epee team of Steaua Bucharest has come in 3rd in the Cup of Europe, a competition held this past Saturday in Marcianise, in Italy. Part of the team were Ana-Maria Popescu, Alexandra Predescu, Greta Vereş and Raluca Sbârcia, head-coached by Cornel Milan. The girls won the two group matches with Plymouth, England and the Italian team Caserta. Then, in the quarterfinals, the Romanians outclassed Spains Club Esgrima Lazaro Cardenas, yet in the semifinals they were defeated by Fiamme Oro of Italy. In the third-place confrontation, Steaua outperformed another Italian team, AFC Aeronautica. We recall that in 2018 Steaua came in 5th, but in the last eleven years they won the Cup of Europe four times, in 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2016. Over 150 fencers, representing 24 delegations of 17 countries, participated in this years edition of the competition held in Italy.
TABLE TENNIS – In this years edition of the Hungarian Open, an annual table tennis tournament, held last week in Budapest, Romania got a bronze medal, in the womens doubles. Bernadette Szőcs and Elizabeta Samara reached as far as the competitions semifinals, yet Samara had no choice other than pulling herself out of the competition, because of a severe cold. Samara also withdrew from the womens singles, where she reached as far as the round of last 16. Elisabeta Samara was supposed to play against Chinas Shiwen Liu.
HANDBALL – both Romanian teams in the EHF Cup were defeated. In Group D on Friday, holders SCM Craiova on home court were defeated by Croatian side Podravka Koprivnica, 26-23. On Saturday, Magura Cisnadie was defeated by Norwegian side Storhamar, 26-18, in Group A, also on home court. For Magura Cisnadie, it was the third defeat they sustained in a similar number of group fixtures.
FOOTBALL – Here are the latest results of the matches played by Romanian teams that are currently on a training stage in warmer countries. In Marbella, Spain, FCSB ended the match against Chinese team Shanghai Shenhua, 2-all, in Turkeys Antalya, Dinamo Bucharest secured a 3-2 win against Latvian opponents FK Liepaja. Also in Turkey, Sepsi Sfantu Gheorghe sustained a 1-2 defeat by Ukrainians side Mariupol, while Astra Giurgiu ended 1-all the match against Bulgarian side Stara Zagora.
TENNIS- We go out with news from the Australian Open. Simona Halep has been eliminated from the tournaments womens singles. In the eighth finals, Halep sustained a 1-6, 4-6, 6-4 defeat by Serena Williams.
