Figure skater Julia Sauter, Romania’s representative at the European Figure Skating Championships held last week in Tallinn, Estonia, ranked 7th in the final standings of the women’s singles. This marks Romania’s best ever performance in a continental figure skating competition. The gold medal was won by Estonian Niina Petrokina, the silver went to Georgian Anastasia Gubanova, while Nina Pinzarrone of Belgium scooped bronze.

 

On Saturday, in Craiova, in the first round of the Davis Cup World Group I play-offs, Bulgaria defeated Romania 3-1. On Friday, in the first singles match, Cezar Creţu won against Bulgarian Piotr Nesterov 6-7, 6-3, 7-6, then Ilian Radulov restored the tie, after defeating Filip Cristian Jianu 6-3, 7-6. On Saturday, in the doubles match, the Romanian pair made up of Victor Cornea / Gabi Adrian Boitan was defeated by the Bulgarian pair Aleksandar Donski / Piotr Nesterov 6-3, 6-3. The final score was set by Adrian Andreev, who defeated Filip Cristian Jianu 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Thus, Bulgaria was promoted to World Group I, and Romania will play in World Group II.

 

The highlight match of the round of 16 of the Women’s National Handball League pitted two clubs representing Romania in Champions League. Rapid Bucharest won 29-26 against Gloria Bistriţa-Năsăud away from home. The third Romanian team performing in Champions League this season, CSM Bucharest, won 32-27 against Măgura Cisnădie, also away from home. On Sunday, CSM Corona Braşov won at home, 32-30, against Dunărea Brăila, one of the Romanian teams playing in the EHF European League. Finally, the other Romanian team performing in the second-tier European competition, SCM Râmnicu Vâlcea, won 27-23 against CSM Iaşi. CSM Bucharest tops the league tables with 42 points, followed by Corona and Minaur Baia Mare, each with 34 points, then Rapid with 31, and Gloria with 30 points.

 

This weekend saw matches counting for the 24th round of the Romanian football Super League. On Friday, in Sibiu, Hermannstadt and UTA Arad drew 0-0, and in Clinceni, Dinamo Bucharest defeated Unirea Slobozia 3-1. On Saturday, FC Botoşani drew 0-0 against Sepsi Sfântu Gheorghe at home, then, in Galaţi, the local side Oţelul defeated Gloria Buzău 2-1. In the highlight match of the day, Universitatea Cluj won 2-1, at home, against Rapid Bucharest. On Sunday, Universitatea Craiova clearly won the match against Poli Iaşi, 4-1 at home, while CFR drew 1-1 against FCSBon home turf. The last match of the round is scheduled for Monday: Farul Constanţa will play Petrolul Ploieşti. Universitatea Cluj tops the league tables with a two-point lead over runner-up FCSB. (VP)
